Bring out the eco-warrior in your pupils, by making natural jewellery to rival any traditional tribal adornment!
For thousands of years, people have worn jewellery made from locally sourced natural materials. Jewellery was often worn to symbolise affinity to a particular group, or believed to bring strength and protect the wearer from harm.
In this workshop, we will learn how to make our own traditional wooden bead-chain, which when worn as a necklace, symbolises the reciprocity of our relationship to nature, and our commitment to understanding and protecting our natural environment. Using simple household tools we will whittle and hollow greenwood sticks to form beads, string them together, decorate with natural materials, and wear them proudly around our necks. The wood used is local and sustainably-sourced from a native British tree.
This activity teaches safe basic tool handling, understanding of tree growth and ID, exploration of tradition and folklore, as well as providing a rich sensory experience from working with greenwood. We will also have the opportunity to sample a tasty drink made from this tree.
